A step by step guide to creating a frightfully ghoulish Halloween cupcake bouquet centerpiece on the cheap.

It is Halloween season!

Yes, that means I am begging my LulaRoe Lady for leggings covered in bats, cats, skellies, and skulls. I am also hunting down all the best Halloween themed decor around town.

I always try to snag awesome Halloween finds on clearance after the holiday is over but I am telling you, those are some slim pickings.

This year I have decided to dress up my table decor with a Halloween Cupcake Bouquet!

In all honesty, I have been seeing these cupcake bouquets everywhere but had not had an appropriate occasion to create one until now. I think it will be a unique way to display the holiday treats and add to the overall creepy ambiance.

If you have seen the cupcake bouquets around town or across the internet, then you may know that small bouquets usually run upwards of fifty-five dollars or more. Crazy, right?

It isn’t crazy. When you purchase from a professional baker, you are purchasing their time and expertise. So often, art and especially food art is undervalued. Many potential customers will complain about pricing and suggest that they can get a cheaper product from a chain store.

Though I understand the plight of the baker I also understand what it is like to be on a budget. One of my greatest thrills is making twenty dollars look like sixty.

How do I do this?

One way to stretch my dollar is that I do a lot of DIY. Of course, there are some limitations to my abilities but I LOVE learning new skills along the way.

The second way I make that twenty dollars look like sixty is by shopping at the Dollar Tree. I can find a variety of products at a low price and love that I am not spending more than a buck.

Almost all of the materials used in this tutorial were purchased at the Dollar Tree.

Materials Needed:

A Halloween Bucket: There are several styles. Choose the one that best fits your party theme.

Three dry floral styrofoam blocks

A large knife

Two bags of colored crinkle cut paper shreds: I used one bag of black and one bag of purple. You can pick whichever colors best match your decor.

Plastic wrap

Colored tissue paper

Scotch tape

One glow in the dark skull head

Undecorated cupcakes refrigerated

Halloween Roses

Decorator’s Icing or your icing of choice

Food Dye to color the icing: I used red but again use what best fits your color scheme and decor.

How to Put It All Together

The cupcake bouquet is created to make cupcakes look like flowers coming out of a vase. Flowers have the benefit of stems to keep them standing upright. Cupcakes do not.

To keep our cupcakes vertical, we will need to attach them to the styrofoam.

Step One:

Sizing the Styrofoam

Your bucket size and shape will determine how much of the styrofoam blocks you will need. The mouth of my bucket was quite wide so I need three styrofoam blocks to fill the space.

Place the styrofoam blocks side by side on a flat surface. Flip your bucket over so that the mouth is facing down and place on top of the styrofoam blocks. At this point, you can either draw or etch around the shape of the bucket to create an outline of where we will be cutting.

Move the bucket out of the way. Using a few toothpicks, connect the styrofoam blocks together. With a large knife, cut around the outline previously drawn. The styrofoam should be circular to match the mouth of the bucket. Troubleshoot to make sure styrofoam snuggly fits into the top of the bucket.

No one wants to have styrofoam on their cupcakes. Ew! Use the plastic wrap to completely wrap around the styrofoam. After wrapping the styrofoam in plastic wrap, I also wrapped it in colored tissue paper. This gives my bouquet a base color so the ugly green styrofoam is not showing. I used the Scotch tape to adhere the colored tissue paper to the bottom side of the styrofoam.

Step Two:

The Filling of the Bucket

If step one was troublesome, this is by far the easiest step of them all. Open the bags of crinkle cut paper and dump them into the bucket. Since I was using two colors I swirled them around a bit to mix the colors.

Place the covered styrofoam in the top of the bucket and push down until snug. You only want about an inch or so sticking out of the top of the bucket.

I created a decorative center for my bouquet by placing a skull head in the center and securing it in the styrofoam. Make sure to keep the skull a bit taller so it does not get in the way of the cupcakes.

Step Three:

Placing of the Cupcakes

The cupcakes work best when they have been refrigerated so they hold better on the toothpicks. We will start by placing the outer rim of cupcakes first and working our way to the center.

Place two toothpicks into the bottom of the cupcake about halfway. Using the toothpicks like prongs, stab them in at an angle into the styrofoam. If the toothpicks push through to the top of your cupcake, just push them back in with a gloved finger.

You do not want your cupcake to be perfectly perpendicular to the table because then your icing will want to slide right off. No one wants that!

Leave about an inch or so of space between each cupcake as you place them around the outside.

As filler and to add to our bouquet, I cut off a few sprigs from the Halloween roses and tucked them between each cupcake. The idea is to cover up the colored tissue paper base and to make the bouquet look full and beautiful. I tucked leaves and petals around the cupcakes to make sure they would not get in the way of icing.

Once the outer row is complete, then you place the inner row. I try to alternate my cupcakes so they look more like a natural bouquet. The inner row is placed similarly to the outer row. Fill in the spaces with sprigs of Halloween roses or leaves.

This is the time to get creative. You can stick leaves and sprigs throughout the bouquet. I love that the Dollar Tree Halloween Roses have little spiders attached. What a cute way to amp up the creepiness of this cute bouquet!

Step Four:

Icing the Cupcakes

This is the fun part! Now it is time to make those naked little cupcakes turn into beautiful flowers fit for your ghoulish bouquet.

To keep things easy, I decided to just do simple rosette flowers and only two colors. Depending on your bouquet and color choices, you can do as many color and flower combinations as you can dream up. I went with a simple white rose and a deep red rose color.

I find that using either a Wilton 1M Open Star Piping Tip or a Wilton 2D Decorating Tip creates the best rosettes.

Carefully swirl your icing onto each cupcake keeping the leaves out of your way. Alternate colors so the bouquet looks even and full.

Step 5:

Finishing Touches

To finish off this creep-tastic and yet beautiful Halloween Cupcake Bouquet, I had to add a few drops of blood!

I create edible blood with chocolate syrup and raspberry preserves to drip over the white roses. You can read more about this technique and other Halloween ideas in my Halloween Spooktacular Disaster.

Now, you have a display that will both wow and delight all of your guests.

Halloween Spooktacular Disaster

A Spooktacular Disaster to add humor and gore to your favorite Halloween treats.

This weekend is Halloween and all the ghosts and goblins are going to be out Trick or Treating. Since it falls on a Saturday this year I imagine many of you will be headed out to parties as well.

Here is where I have to get really honest with you.

I had planned to make some truly Halloween inspired treats for you guys so you had something fun to bring to all of those Halloween parties this weekend. Well, I had some techniques in mind to share but the cupcakes I made were lacking the most important ingredient of all: Love.

In a rush, I used a box mix (what?! I know. I know.) and by the time I got to icing them, I was just depressed with the whole mess.

Hiding the Evidence

I had every intention of not sharing my failure with you and just sweeping everything under the rug. But, part of my charm is my ability to screw things up. No, really, I am constantly telling Captain Cupcakeasaurus that I’m The Ruiner. It sounds like a pretty awesome arch nemesis or villain name, doesn’t it?

So with the included disclaimer, I’m going to show you the monstrosity that was my Halloween Cupcakes. Compared to the Caramel Cinnamon Apple Pie Cupcakes last week, these sad little puppies looked like the bargain bin ones that the new cake decorator screwed up on at the grocery store.

Okay, that may be cruel but I don’t mean it to be cruel toward the new cake decorator as much as I mean it as cruelty to myself. I’m ashamed but I’m going to share anyway. Why? Because I promised to be honest and maybe my failures can be someone else’s successes or maybe we can find solidarity in cake failure together.

Since these cupcakes did not come out as planned, I will still be sharing a cupcake recipe tomorrow with you but it is not a batch I made this week. They are a family favorite that I think you will enjoy regardless.

Vampire Bites

On previous Halloweens, I have made cupcakes and tried to be creative with different spook inspired decorating. One of my favorites is the Vampire Bite Cupcake. You can use any of your favorite flavors of cake and still make them into Vampire Bites. Like I mentioned above, I used a basic white cake mix this time around.


Then using the Wilton 230 tip, I inject “blood” into two parallel holes like a vampire bite. The blood is a mix of strawberry preserves (raspberry works too), chocolate syrup and 2-3 drops of food coloring. The ratio is about two parts preserves to one part chocolate syrup. I like using the preserves because it even adds a little chunkiness to the blood which I think is disgustingly awesome.

The Wilton 230 tip is also great for injecting other types of fillings into your cupcakes. I also injected a few with green “slime”. I used the Wilton Slime Green Sparkling Decorator’s Gel for the slime both in and on top of the cupcakes.



I am always a fan of zombies. Just think about it. Any cool costume can be made cooler by being a zombie. What’s cooler than dressing up as a ballerina? A ZOMBIE ballerina. What’s cooler than dressing up as a doctor? A ZOMBIE doctor.

What do all your zombie friends want to eat? BRAINS!

Another fun technique for Halloween is to make brain cupcakes. They can be filled with blood too for extra gross factor. Using a brain colored frosting —Wait! What color are brains anyway? This is kind of artist’s choice because fresh living brains are pink but the formaldehyde brains look more gray.

Anyway, first you’ll do a flat base icing on top of the cupcake.

Then, using Wilton size 10 tip draw a straight line slightly right of center and moving out to the right edge curl the icing around and make a zigzag motion all the way back to your starting point. Using the same technique, you will do the left side of the brain. For added depth and icing, I like to add another swivel of icing on top of the zigzags on both sides. It gives your brain more of a 3D effect as well.

While you are creatively making ghoulish cupcakes, you may also want to throw in some monsters as well. A few candy eyeballs can go along way. My color of icing here is not ideal but the possibilities are endless. I used the Wilton 233 tip to make the monsters look furry. Just squeeze the piping bag with the tip on the cupcake and then pull upwards to create those long stringy hair looking pieces.

While I was playing with slime and blood and whatnot I got the idea to try something else out too.

Experiment Time

Peeps learned awhile ago that Peeps didn’t just have to be a treat for Easter. They are now sold in the shape of pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween. Peeps aren’t the only ones to catch on to this marketing potential. Cadbury eggs aren’t just for Easter now either.

Cadbury makes a Screme Egg that is a Cadbury Egg with green slimy insides. Still just as sweet and delicious as ever, just green.

Well, I wondered what would happen if I baked a Screme Egg into a cupcake. My hopes were that you could bite into a cupcake and get a mouthful of chocolate and green Cadbury goo.

As it so happens, things didn’t quite go as planned. The Screme Egg was still relatively intact but the ooze had oozed itself out of the cupcake made the wrapper difficult to remove. It also didn’t do much for the flavor of the cupcake so I will mark this down as a failure and a lesson learned.


Ghouls, Goblins and Ghosts: Oh My!

There are so many fun things out there now to help with decorating Halloween party cupcakes. There are candy bones, candy knives, and candy tombstones. You can turn Oreos into bats or licorice into spiders or melted white chocolate into spider webs.

With all the different options out there, try not to get overwhelmed. Getting overwhelmed leads you to where I was last night: burnt out and not feeling the love. If you don’t love the food you’re making, it shows in the taste and presentation of that food.

Towards the end, I realized what was wrong and had to call time of death on my cupcaking debacle. I let Little Cupcakeasaurus Rex take over and he enjoyed decorating them with bones and blood.

There’s no harm in letting the little ones do their thing, especially for Halloween cupcakes. I’m pretty sure kids know more about what is scary than we do.

Go wild! If there is ever a holiday to make not so pretty cupcakes, I think Halloween would be it.
